Nederland’s First Measurable Snowfall

October 6, 2016, first measurable snowfall of season: 2.5 inches

A quick moving system brought Nederland its first measurable snowfall of the season on Thursday morning. Snowfall amounts ranged from 2 to 4 inches, with totals largely dependent upon elevation.  Below about 7300, feet precipitation remained predominantly rain, and there was little or no snowfall accumulation. Road surfaces were generally warm and remained wet and ice-free.

A measurable snowfall is one 0.1 inches or greater, and forecasting the first snowfall of an inch or greater is a common pastime of meteorologists and weather-geeks alike. So, when does Nederland typically see it’s first measurable snowfall? How about the first inch of snowfall? These tables are based on 6 years worth of data. As you can see, the first measurable snowfall in Ned is normally during the first few weeks of October, although it can snow even in September!

Thanks Bryon. My only three snowfall occurrences since 1979 in October have been:
    October 10, 1979 2.0 inches
    October 29, 2011 0.8 inches
    October 18, 2015 T inches
I don’t have the full stats for first measurable snowfall for each of my 38 years of record.
    Kevin
